Abstract:
Air quality and environmental sustainability are seriously threatened by the Philippines' rapid urbanization and rising vehicle density. Conventional route design mostly emphasizes the reduction of trip time or distance, often overlooking the ecological consequences of driving behavior. This study introduces an innovative method for optimizing drive cycle generation particularly designed for the Philippine setting, with the objective of enhancing green route planning and reducing urban car emissions. The research employs a data-driven approach, gathering empirical driving data from many vehicle categories functioning in varied traffic scenarios across Metro Manila and maybe other significant cities in the Philippines. This data includes vehicle speed, acceleration, deceleration, and idle patterns, reflecting the intricacies of standard driving behavior in the area. Advanced statistical methodologies, such as clustering and Markov chain analysis, are used to create representative drive cycles that precisely capture the distinct attributes of Philippine traffic flow, including congestion levels, route kinds, and driver behavior. The produced driving cycles serve as the basis for incorporating environmental factors into route planning algorithms. Utilizing vehicle-specific emission models allows for the evaluation of the environmental effect of various routes based on projected driving behavior defined by sample drive cycles. This facilitates the discovery of "green routes" that reduce fuel consumption and emissions, regardless of whether they are the shortest or quickest alternatives. The research will assess the efficacy of the proposed method using simulations and comparative studies, illustrating the potential for substantial reductions in vehicle emissions via the adoption of drive cycle-optimized green route planning. This research enhances the sustainability of the transportation system in the Philippines by establishing a comprehensive framework for incorporating environmental considerations into route planning, encouraging eco-conscious driving practices, and facilitating informed policy decisions to mitigate the environmental impact of urban mobility. This strategy will enable navigation systems and urban planners to select environmentally sustainable routes, so fostering cleaner air and a better environment amid increasing urbanization.
