Abstract:
CO2 capture and utilisation (CCU) is one of the main pillars of EU strategy towards the reduction of the greenhouse gases. The development of symbiotic actions between CO2-emitting industries and potential receivers not only contributes to the above advantages but also has the possibility of creating new high value added products. This article presents a methodology and the corresponding tool for the identification and assessment of potential collaboration between companies that emit CO2 (sources) and industries that may reuse CO2 (receivers), demonstrated in the island of Cyprus. The methodology used is based on technical and geographical criteria. Thus, for each potential industrial symbiotic scheme, the technical characteristics of a potential source (such us the required mass flow and the acceptable level of purity of CO2) and the characteristics of a potential receiver such us the permitted technology readiness level of its existing technology are identified and assessed.
